Informants:- Always welcome. About 10 new events have been added to the site this week, perhaps more. I have thrown them on without too much checking of links. If you find a broken, dead or invalid link, let me know. I am trying to develop new ideas for the site. Here are a few of them. A new look diary, that everyone and anyone can add to and a new look Race Calendar. It's just a test at the moment, but feel free to have a go, add an event or two, comment on it, make a suggestion. They need to be maintaining, a task which can be shared around the club. New
Look Diary If you are willing and able to edit the diary, let me know. More the merrier. 160808 |
Well we are now into week 6 of our travels, I think last time I emailed we were in Vein Vaing in Lao where we did the famous tubing down the river stopping at lots of river side bars on the way down. We then headed to Vientaine via White water raft which was a little scary! Veintaine was lovely, lots of very cheap french food we had ribeye steak for $5 with all the trimmings, oh and I finally got a nice bottle of wine. Well you have to treat your self now and again. From here we headed to Hanoi in Vietnam which I can only describe as totally hectic, motorbikes everywhere beeping their horns constantly, and most people trying to scam you. Crossing the road was a real effort, and the heat! I break into a sweat just stepping outside. Went to Halong bay which was beautiful, loads of isalnds in the huge bay. We did some treking, biking and lots of drinking awful local wine with the locals (I'm sure they gave us lighter fuel for a laugh). We made some more friends in Halong bay who we also met again in Hue. Hue is lovely, deserted beach and the Royal Palace (Citidel) was very interesting especially seeing how it once was before it was bombed. We spent alot of money in Hoi An at the tailers, it's amazing they made me a 3 piece suit and a evening dress in one day (I just hope they still fit when I get home!). We moved onto Nha Trang (big beach resort in Vietnam) a couple of days ago, the food was great but I have to say the beach was a little disappointing, lots of litter! We went to the mineral mud spring centre which was great fun and the local theme park on one of the islands off the coast which was cool. We are now in the Central Highlands at Dalat, but unfortunately it is raining, were hoping it's bright in the morning so we can take a tour through the mountains and sample the coffee at the plantations. Thanks again for the e-mails, keep them coming it's nice to receive a nice friendly message from home. Naomi & Tim Warr PS if you want to see some pictures get on face book and become my friend, then you'll be able to see them all. 040808 |
I think these pictures belong in the July news sheet, but I was on holiday.... Ian is looking fresh from a quick
game of "splits" laid on by the race organisers. It's
a race for the elderly, and the game "splits" involves
stretching and the throwing of knives, so it a good all round
exercise. I understand that he won, but needed oxygen afterwards. Dave running too fast for the silver nitrate "plate" camera to clearly capture his image. Thanks to Geof for the photographs. 080808

"who the bloody hell is Ricky?" I asked several people at Darley Bridge tonight and the best I got was that he used to live in the area but any further history melted into the Derbyshire hills. Myself and Duncan went to the picturesque Derbyshire village of Darley Bridge to do Ricky's race. Despite wondering if we would get there in time we arrived with 10 minutes to go and paid the acceptable entry fee of £3. I would give this definite fell race status with the short start from the road sending us off into a wooded climb on track and unmetaled road before descending back towards the village - the sting in the tail then going straight back up to a hill on the other side of the village bearing a trig point and marvellous views over the surrounding area if you had time to look up with lungs bursting. The last mile followed the ridge of the hill and descended back to a field at the back of the village pub. A traditional and magic summers evening run. My advice is to make a diary entry for next year , I will guarantee two things;
TC Postscript : Well done TC [he can retire any day now!]

Well the sole Hatton Dart runner at the Newark Half Marathon, was Claire and here she is.
She obviously enjoyed herself as you can see. 100808 I would like to take this opportunity to apologise. I know it's overdue but it's an apology anyway. Firstly I would like to apologise for all the junk and SPAM mail I have been forwarding to all members recently. I realise now that I was wrong to do this. I am sincerely sorry. I would also like to take this opportunity to apologise to all the club members I have been cheeky to. In particular to all the club members that ran from Etwall on Tuesday night. I know it was childish to jump in the puddles and splash everyone. I apologise unreservedly. To Dan I would like to say sorry for spreading cow manure on his arm. It was childish and to those I pushed into the nettles I am truly sorry. I would not have liked that, not with my delicate skin. I can understand why the other club members chased after me on the run, I know their intention was to drown me in a large puddle. The fact is you weren't able to catch me, as I am so quick, nibble and athletic. I will be watching my back for the next few weeks.

Whilst most of you were sensibly tucked up in bed last Sunday, Tony P, Simon & myself were heading out for Tony's Monyash off-roader, and good it was too. The run was eventful for a rather extraordinary sight : flying fish! As we came out of woodland between Monsall Dale and Ashford we pulled up for a breather by a large pool where we saw trout leaping up high out of the water to catch Nymph flies. Oh and we foolhardily decided to take a detour which saw us squelching uphill through boggy woodland, good job Gordy wasn't with us he'd have been yelping. Fletch Thanks to TC for his inspirational idea to have a run from a micro brewery [Tue 19 August 2008]. A good run and as much food and drink for £10. A good place for the monthly chat! Apologies to Simon and anyone else who turned up at Belvedere Park, directed there by an out of date diary. See new developments. 200808

At least six intrepid Hatton Darts went to Race the Train.... Thanks to Jim for the photos. Hatton Darts had 6 runners competing at Race The Train in Tywyn. The
course was extremely muddy after recent downpours, though thankfully we
had only one heavy shower to contend with. Gordy and Jim set off like
men on a mission gobbling up the outward 7 miles, before the tougher
return miles up steep slopes and boggy patches.
Gordy showed he was no snail as he pushed on strongly to finish in a good time of 1:38:14. Jim found the last few miles hard going after a fortnight's holiday and a couple of muddy falls, as Fletch put in a late surge to overtake him in the last half mile to finish in 1:44:57, with Jim close behind in 1:45:42 - all 3 beat the train. Next in was Tony P, who seems to relish long,
tough
off-roaders, even managing a wave to wife Lynne on the train, as he ran
on to cross line in a time of 1:56:13.
Our ladies, Kath Hallam & Kath Caulton both put in superb performances with Kath H. taking mud and marsh in her stride to finish in a fine 2:06:57. Kath C. is another runner who seems to thrive on testing courses as she finished with a smile on her face in 2:15:17. Fletch

This was an event that exercise your mind and body. Though we know Gordy is a formidable runner, he struggles with picture books. TC couldn't make the event, though someone thought they saw him.
Thank to Tony P for the pictures. 200808
Gordy would like it to be known that he is organising another trip North to the Hell Runner event. If you are interested and want to know more click here and some details should be put on in the next decade or so. Gordy
